Detective Mitch Speed started a career in law enforcement at the age of 36 and worked persistently to learn, grow, and move into positions to best serve the community. Mitch prided himself on being a husband, father, and a man of God. During his career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Mitch held multiple roles working the jails, patrol, the Burglary Suppression Team, and Detective – working Robbery and Assaults. Mitch stepped away from work to battle Stage 4 Cancer and lost his battle on July 7th, 2018. Helping others was a passion for Mitch – always demonstrating love, kindness, respect, and compassion even to those he arrested.
Vickie, wife of Mitch, knows the demanding challenges law enforcement families encounter from their lives of service and dedication to their communities. Vickie experienced incredible trials through life as a woman, balancing career, mother, and wife, while caring for her husband after cancer diagnosis. Vickie fought alongside Mitch in his cancer battle in the face of fear, grief, confusion, and the overwhelming disruption of their lives to then face the long-lasting & devastating loss of her life partner. Vickie’s journey out of the pain of her loss has blossomed into Mitch’s passion for helping others thus founding Blue Cancer Connect.
Blue Cancer Connect boldly stands to support law enforcement officers and their families facing critical health and financial situations and continues the generous faithful acts of Mitch Speed
